What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin layers of composite or porcelain material that are placed directly over the surface of the natural tooth.

Dental veneers are used to completely change the look of the tooth; patients have the ability to customize the shape, size, color, and length. With dental veneers, building the smile of your dreams is completely possible.

Do I Need Dental Veneers?

Veneers are typically used to address and correct the following issues:

If you feel that you could benefit from addressing any of the above issues with your own smile, you may benefit from dental veneers. A consultation with your dentist can help you determine if this cosmetic dental treatment is right for you. Before any is done to your teeth, the dentist can take a mold of your teeth and have the lab design the “look” that you may want on the model. At this point, you are able to see what the teeth can look like before any prepping of your teeth are done. It allows you and the dentist to make any changes to the model to get the desired outcome.

How are Dental Veneers Placed?

Unlike dental crowns - which fit over the top of the tooth and require an extensive amount of preparation work - dental veneers require only a few millimeters of enamel to be removed for proper placement.

Your dentist will begin by ensuring that you are numbed with a local anesthetic. Impressions will be taken. He or she will then quickly and precisely remove a thin layer of enamel to make room for the veneers. Temporary veneers will be made, and your impressions will be sent out for the fabrication of your permanent veneers.

The permanent veneers will take about a week or two to be finished. During this time, you will wear your temporary veneers, which will provide you with a sneak peek of what to expect with your permanents.

When you return to the dental office, your temporary veneers will be removed, and your permanent veneers will be cemented into place. Your dentist will adjust your bite as needed to ensure that they are comfortable, and your new veneers will be polished. You will then be free to leave with your beautiful new smile.

Caring for Dental Veneers

Dental veneers do not require any sort of special maintenance or home care; simply ensure that you are following through with your brushing and flossing at home, and ensure that you attend all of your dental cleaning and check-up appointments.

Most people who take proper care of their dental veneers can expect to enjoy anywhere from 10-15 years of use out of their veneers.
