Why Do I Need To Floss?
Continue reading to learn more about why flossing is important.
Flossing Basics
Plaque is essentially a sticky film of bacteria that rests on the teeth. If plaque is allowed to remain on the surface or between the teeth, it poses a risk for causing the development of decay in the protective layer of enamel. Once the enamel has been compromised, the tooth becomes extremely susceptible to further decay.. As plaque builds up, it turns into calculus(tartar) and leads to periodontal disease(gum disease)
Benefits of flossing include:
- Prevent gingivitis and gum disease
- Prevents formation of caries (decay of the tooth)
- Avoids bad breath
- Avoid health conditions that are directly linked to gum disease such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and more
Caring for your oral health has a direct impact on the health of the rest of your body; it’s important to ensure that you are taking all necessary precautions.
Proper Floss Techniques
Practicing proper flossing habits is important for ensuring that you are properly removing all signs of harmful plaque from between the teeth.
In order to properly floss your teeth:
- Take 18-24 inches of floss and wrap one end around each index finger
- Pull the floss taut between your fingers
- Guide the floss between your teeth
- Bend the floss around the base of the tooth in the form of a C, have the floss touch the inside and outside of the tooth. Swipe the floss up and down and in and out to reach the space in between the teeth and gums
- Continue this until all spaces between the teeth have been completed
The type of floss you use is completely up to your discretion. Waxed floss is usually the floss of choice, as it is much less likely to fray or tear.
Flossing should be done in the evening prior to bed. Floss before brushing your teeth. Flossing will “loosen” the plaque and brushing will help remove it. If possible, floss after you eat to prevent the food from sitting between your teeth.
