Why is Fluoride Important?
What is Fluoride?
Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that has proved to have various medical benefits. It has proven to be exceptionally beneficial in strengthening and reinforcing the protective outer layer of the tooth, known as the enamel.
Fluoride has proven to be beneficial and successful in the following scenarios:
- Rebuilding/strengthening weak tooth enamel
- Reverse early tooth decay
- Prevent cavities
- Prevent tooth enamel loss
- Maintain healthy, bacteria-free oral environment
- Protecting children’s teeth
Fluoride Sources
Most of the drinking water in America is fluoridated in order to provide people with easy access to the various benefits of fluoride; it’s currently estimated that roughly 75% of American water is fluoridated. However, much of the water in the bay area doesn’t have enough fluoride in the water. It is best to contact your water service provider to find out how much fluoride is in your water.
Fluoride can also be found in most ADA-approved toothpastes and mouthwashes; this is a fantastic way to ensure that you get a good amount of fluoride while spending time brushing for a minimum of two minutes twice daily.
It’s strongly recommended to receive fluoride treatments from your dentist or dental hygienist during your visit in-office. This is often the best way to receive a high amount of fluoride that will be correctly applied to the teeth.
The fluoride, usually dispensed in the form of a gel or foam, will be placed onto the teeth. In some cases, a fluoride varnish will be applied, allowed to sit for up to 6 hours, and rinsed off; the method that is used is dependent upon your dentist or dental hygienist’s preference. It’s a simple process, but it’s a crucial part of maintaining your oral health.
Who Needs a Fluoride Treatment?
Fluoride treatments can be exceptionally beneficial for children, as they can help protect their teeth from weakening and experiencing decay. Most children’s toothpastes and mouthwashes contain fluoride, and in most cases, dentists strongly recommend fluoride treatments in-office for most children.
Elderly individuals or those who struggle with a debilitating condition may struggle to properly maintain their oral health, putting them at high risk for developing decay in their teeth. These individuals may also highly benefit from fluoride treatments, as they can help preserve the integrity of the protective layer of enamel.
